A MESSAGE FROM OUR

DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE COUNSELING

I'm an image

Sarah Honan, Director of College Counseling, shares What Our Students Need to Hear Right Now in her January blog post. Below is an excerpt:

When you ask school-based professionals - teachers, counselors, administrators - why they do what they do, you will usually get some variation on this response: To be the person for my students that I needed when I was in school. It’s why I entered the college counseling profession over a decade ago. As a student at a large, public high school, my college counseling process looked like one appointment with my counselor senior year during which I handed over a complete list of schools, corresponding due dates, and a resume of my activities in the hope that she would learn a little bit about me before completing my recommendation letters (did I mention this was our first and only meeting?)

Student musicians earn All-State honors

Congratulations to Luke Tan ’24 and Sophia Fontaine ’26, who earned the opportunity to perform with the New Jersey All-State Band. The LA students auditioned for the All-State High School Bands and Orchestra at J.P. Stevens High School in Edison on Jan. 21.

Sophia was accepted into the Wind Ensemble on euphonium and Luke was accepted into the Wind Ensemble and Orchestra on battery percussion.  Only students who were accepted into this year's three New Jersey region ensembles were qualified to audition for All-State, so only the best of the best young musicians are accepted into New Jersey All-State ensembles. Furthermore, students placed in the Wind Ensemble receive the highest audition scores on their instruments.

World Language and Culture Week event

features many impressive performances

Students in all three divisions celebrated World Language and Culture Week with a series of activities and events from Jan. 18-20. The students used poetry, song and dance to address a theme of love in all performances recited in Latin, Spanish and Mandarin.

The festivities began at the Middle School division meeting on Jan. 18 in the Berry Performing Arts Center. The Middle Schoolers used this as a warm-up for the main event in front of a packed house of Upper School students and teachers the following day. Students in Grades 7-12 put on a spectacular 90-minute show in the PAC on Jan. 19 and the Lower School wrapped up the week with two assemblies on Jan. 20 (see story below).

Lower School classes share messages of love to recognize World Language Week

The Lower School wrapped up a three-day schoolwide celebration of World Language and Culture Day with two events on Friday, Jan. 20. Lower School Spanish teacher Maria Hinestroza hosted the performances and guided the students.

Students in Pre-K, Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten gathered for an intimate Early Childhood assembly in Lower Snowdon. Each class made its own presentation in Spanish before all three classes combined for a rousing finale. Later in the morning, students in Grades 1-5 gathered for a special assembly in the Berry Performing Arts Center. Each performance was introduced by the grade level teachers and delivered its own positive message in an entertaining way.

Seniors earn early decision acceptances

Congratulations to several seniors in the Class of 2023 who have made their college plans official after accepting Early Decision admission to their No. 1 choices. For the next several weeks, the WHEN will include spotlights on seniors who have earned Early Decision admission.

Among the first to receive the good news was Briana Di Landro '23, who will matriculate to Columbia University, where she intends to major in Public Health with a possible minor in biological sciences. Briana said her career interests developed as a student in Mrs. Justine Borzumato’s Biology Honors and AP Biology classes and through her work as the founder and co-leader of the Hispanic LatinX Alliance (HLA) student affinity group. She plans to help make healthcare accessible and affordable for underserved communities.  “Columbia is known to have an inclusive environment that challenges your perspective and that's what first drew me in. Their student organization, Student Organization of Latinxs (SOL), gives me the opportunity to solidify LatinX heritage in the school community and its surrounding communities. Columbia’s Public Health Club will also allow my goals for the future to develop through their yearly outreach programs in NYC and their own goal of improving the quality of  health care for racial and ethnic minorities.”
