A MESSAGE FROM OUR LOWER SCHOOL HEAD

I'm an image

JohnEric Advento, Lower School Head, discusses the importance of Grit and Resilience in his November blog post. Below is an excerpt:

This past Coffee and Conversation, we continued with the theme that we started the school year with and focused our talk on Grit and Resilience. We deconstructed and amplified concepts from Angela Duckworth’s book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance.  Parents took a moment to complete a short Parent Questionnaire, and I introduced the survey by stating: “These are a number of statements that may or may not apply to you. There are no right or wrong answers. Please complete all 10 prompts and we’ll debrief at the end of our talk.”

We started the conversation with a review of the meaning of grit as the combination of passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Grit is special in emphasizing goals that take a long time to achieve and how relative that is based on a person’s life span. A “long time” for a 6-year-old is two weeks.  Comparatively, a long time for an adult may be a couple of years.

Third graders leading service project

LA third graders in the classes of Ms. Katherine Heiss and Mrs. Jen Molloy are leading a year-long community service project with the Edison Municipal Animal Shelter. Each month a different grade will participate and occasionally partner with other classes on a project related to this initiative.

This month, the PreK(3) and JK(4) students are helping with a pet food drive and are eagerly pursuing Purina products. Last week, the young students collaborated to make posters advertising the November food drive. Other grade levels and the specials classes including art, STEM and Spanish will get involved in the upcoming months. Future initiatives being planned include making blankets, dog and cat toys, creating mugs and calendars, and running another food drive in the spring.

K students share 3D shapes museum

The LA Kindergarten classroom turned into a three-dimensional museum on Tuesday, November 7 as Kindergarten students hosted their families and peers to showcase their real world application learning about three-dimensional shapes.

To highlight our students’ understanding and share with LA families and community members, Mrs. Jenn Geissler’s Kindergarten invited families, students and their fifth grade buddies to the classroom.  During the visit, students stood behind their 3-D museums to describe and speak about shapes they found in the world that classify as three-dimensional.  Students stood proudly as they practiced their public speaking skills, one of the school’s signature programs, with our community.

Coaches Jeff Martin (Gold soccer), Rick Riepl (cross country) and Rita Bokert (girls’ tennis) shared brief highlights of their team’s seasons. Mr. Romeo spoke on behalf of Green head coach Lee Nicholls, whose team posted a remarkable 6-0-1 record. He also encouraged the athletes to continue training and get ready to compete in the winter athletic season, which begins next week.

Seniors share personal messages

Two seniors delivered speeches on Nov. 2 in the Berry Performing Arts Center. Congratulations to Andy Ma ’24 and Tanya Chowdary ’24 for sharing important personal messages with their peers.

Andy spoke about self-discovery and the importance of embracing the unknown and continuing to evolve. He encouraged his peers to appreciate their distinct pathways and to make every chapter and moment count.

Tanya shared a few truths about herself after confessing to a lifelong issue with making up stories that led her to question who she is and if others truly know her. She’s starting to change her ways and is “becoming the person I want to be.”
