A MESSAGE FROM OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL HEAD |
|
|
| Jennifer Rose, Middle School Head, weaves together Black History Month, poetry and AI to encourage readers to explore their curiosity in her February blog post. Below is an excerpt:
First, a poem in honor of Black History Month: “Oh, Black scientists, true heroes of our time, Your courage and your genius are sublime. You've changed the world with your discoveries, Your work is more than just a series of successes. From medicine to math, you've made a mark, Your studies of the stars have lit the dark. From physics to biology, your work is grand, Your findings have made a lasting stand. |

| Black History Month events continue |
All three divisions of LA students continued the school’s celebration of Black History Month with a series of activities and events in the second week of February. The Upper School’s Black Student Alliance made presentations at two assemblies in the Lower School on Feb. 10, joining students in the Early Childhood Program in Lower Snowdon before presenting to Grades 1-5 in the Berry Performing Arts Center. BSA members Gbemi Olarewaju ’23, Zackary Dort ’23 and Naomi Valcourt ’24 began the day sharing the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? with students in the Early Childhood Program in Lower Snowdon. |

| First graders share published works |
First graders presented their own written work and illustrations at class publishing parties on Feb. 9 in the classrooms of Mrs. Jennifer Molloy and Mrs. Bethany Howell. The students wrote their own personal narratives and went through the entire writing process, beginning with a rough draft and various stages of editing. They added colorful illustrations and the books were bound into hard covers. |

| Sixth graders impress with cell projects |
Sixth grade students recently presented their models of the cell and they did not disappoint, coming up with more innovative ways to share their projects. As a treasured teaching tool, this project holds steadfast as a reliable way for our students to learn about the functions of the cell organelles. In small groups, students met to research the jobs of each part of the cell and discussed how to represent them in a 3D design in the space of a large shoe box. |

| Chemistry students create batteries in lab |
Honors Chemistry students who have been learning about voltaic cells engaged in an interesting experiment in the lab. They constructed 12 different small-scale batteries complete with salt bridges, electrolytes, cathode, and anode, and measured their potential (voltage) with digital voltmeters.
Dr. Brent Giles’ students used their results to determine the activity series for zinc, copper, magnesium, and tin, and define electrical potential and predict the direction of electron flow in a battery. They compared their results with a virtual lab that let them see what was happening at the atomic scale, and speculated about what makes a useful battery in the real world.

Seniors earn early decision acceptances |
Congratulations to several seniors in the Class of 2023 who have made their college plans official after accepting Early Decision admission to their No. 1 choices. For the next several weeks, the WHEN will include spotlights on seniors who have earned Early Decision admission.
Among the first to receive the good news was Aydin Aziz ’23, who will join some of his LA classmates at Northeastern University. Aydin was looking for a modern school in an urban setting and found a wonderful fit in Northeastern University. He plans to study biology in the College of Sciences.
“I liked the school because it had a nice campus within the city of Boston, and it was very prestigious, especially in the field of sciences,” Aydin said.
Aydin believes the ability to take multiple Advanced Placement classes at LA will facilitate his transition to college courses and assist in the management of his course load. He participated in many other school activities, which required dedication and time management.
