Upper School Athletes of the Week - Oct. 17

Rudy Brandl

Mike Romeo, Athletic Director, announced the Upper School Athletes of the Week at Monday’s divisional meeting. Congratulations to cross country runner David Ezra Flatau-Jones ’23 and soccer players Jazmyn Gordon ’23 and Angelina Vargas ’23.

It’s hard to remember a cross country season without David being a part of it. This is David's eighth and final campaign on the trails. He is a solid team member who always works hard in practice and that hard work paid off last Wednesday in the GMC Blue Divisional Meet at Thompson Park. With three of the top five Ram runners missing, David stepped up his game big time. He lowered his career personal best by 42 seconds by going under the 23 minute mark (22:56) and helped the Ram squad secure third place in the division.

For four seasons, Jasmyn has been the rock of the team’s defense. Soccer is obviously a team sport, but Jaz has been known to single handedly keep us competitive against higher level opponents. On Saturday, her play on kept the Rams in the GMC Tournament game vs. Metuchen. Defenders in soccer do not compile stats that are easily recorded, but for anyone who has seen the team play, it’s obvious the value that she brings.

Angelina scores goals. Lots of goals. She is our school’s all-time leader in goals per game. With COVID, a few injuries and playing for DR’s national team she’s only played 48 games over her four seasons, but she has scored 74 goals. On Saturday vs. Metuchen, the entire Metuchen defense followed her for 80 minutes. She had three or four defenders all over her. She still managed to set up the team’s only goal in a 2-1 loss.
