Upper School Athletes of the Week - Jan. 29

Rudy Brandl

Mike Romeo, Athletic Director, announced the Upper School Athletes of the Week at the Monday morning meeting on Jan. 29 in the Berry Performing Arts Center. Congratulations to swimmer Corelle “Coco” Lee ’27, basketball player Mackias Ysaac ’26, track athlete William Wei ’25 and cheerleaders Jayda Richter ’27 and Giselle Rodriguez ’25.

During last weekend’s GMC meet, Coco’s time of 1:12.67 made school history by breaking a 26-year old school record in the 100 breaststroke, beating the old mark of 1:13.34 set by Lauren Krulick in 1998. “When you have ninth graders earning medals and breaking records, it’s obviously a very good sign for the future of our program,” LA head coach Shane Tonery said.

Mackias impressed the coaching staff with his consistent effort in practice and his varsity-level focus on game-day. He has emerged as a key player on the varsity team after starting the season on JV. Mackias even found his way into the starting lineup earlier this month. Mackias is someone that represents the overachieving mentality that the LA program needs to move forward.

William joined winter track late after switching from basketball in December. Since then, he has made up for the lost time by showing consistent improvement every day. William was rewarded for his efforts when he picked up a medal as a member of the 4x200 relay team that finished second at the GMC Relays.

Jayda always gives 100% whether it’s at practice or cheering for games. Jayda is always stepping out of her comfort zone and trying new stunts and has become one the team’s main flyers. Even when she is not flying, the team can count on her to lead the cheers and excite the crowd.

Giselle had received digital A of W recognition earlier in January but enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate in person with her peers at the Upper School meeting. Giselle’s determination and work ethic is outstanding. She is always looking for ways to improve her technique, but most importantly she never gives up on her teammates. She is the first to encourage them to try a new skill over and over until they master it and is always there to offer insight or help spot other stunt groups. Giselle has quickly become one of the team’s strongest cheerleaders and the coaches are proud of all of the effort she puts into helping this be a successful season.
