Tommy O’Connor ’25 Wins State Title, Leads Track Athletes

Rudy Brandl

Tommy O’Connor ’25 made school history last week when he became the first LA indoor track and field athlete to win a state title. Tommy closed the 400-meter run at the NJSIAA Non-Public B Championships with an amazing sprint to win a photo finish in a time of 52.85 seconds. The LA sophomore outkicked the runner-up by three-hundredths of a second and the top four runners hit the wire in a microscopic span of 0.23 seconds.

“I feel like I have a pretty decent kick, and coming around to the end I saw the opportunity and I took it,” said Tommy, whose performance qualified him for the NJSIAA Meet of Champions in March. “To get first and be the first person in my school to do it is everything.”

The Rams also qualified for the M of C after a third-place run in the 4x400 relay. The foursome of Vineeth Reddy ’23, Matt Piccoli ’23, Adam Eisdorfer ’25 and Tommy O’Connor ’25 combined for a time of 3:43.07.

Emma Herko ’25 captured two medals and scored three team points for the LA girls with fifth place in the 800 meters (2:33.93) and sixth place in the 400 meters (1:05.94).
