The Middle School kicked off its recognition of Black History Month on Feb. 1 with the first of four division meetings dedicated to celebrating Black achievements and cultural contributions. Seventh-grader Chelsea Hunter ’28 (pictured) hosted last week’s opening presentation on Black contributions to music. Chelsea covered the origins and key influencers of various genres, and the impact these artists have made on our culture. Featured artists included Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Tupac and Prince.
The Black Student Alliance made a presentation at an Upper School meeting on Feb. 3, with Italia Penevolpe ’25 and Xavier Hinds ’23 sharing details about the horrific Rosewood Massacre, which took place 100 years ago. Nosagie Obadiaru ’23 discussed Tupac and how artistry can be a tool for activism in this week’s BSA feature. The BSA will make more presentations at Upper School meetings throughout the month and lead two assemblies in the Lower School on Friday, Feb. 10, joining students in the Early Childhood Program in Lower Snowdon before presenting to Grades 1-5 in the Berry Performing Arts Center.
