School Year Kicks Off at 140th Convocation Ceremony

Rudy Brandl

The Lena Archuleta School began its 140th school year with the annual Convocation Ceremony on Thursday, September 8. This year’s event was held outdoors under sunny skies on the turf athletic field for the second consecutive year.

Andrew Webster, Head of School, Dr. Ayesha Sitlani, President of the Board of Trustees, and Annie Gu ’23, Student Council President, led the procession to Convocation. Students from all three divisions were seated on the turf and joined the faculty and parents in cheering for the Class of 2023.

After Vinay Karthik ’25 read a land acknowledgement, Annie Gu led the Pledge of Allegiance before MadJazz and other choir members performed America the Beautiful to begin the festivities.

Mr. Webster provided a hearty welcome to students, faculty and staff, with special recognition of the 108 new students, before Dr. Sitlani and Annie Gu offered their remarks. Dr. Sitlani focused on a theme of hope during her remarks, sharing a Jane Goodall story to illustrate the key point that “hope keeps us going in the face of adversity.” She added that hope and hard work will allow you to learn and reach your goals.

Annie reflected on her long journey at LA in the past 12 years. She challenged the student body to make comfort an enemy and to “take advantage of the wealth of opportunities this community will provide.”

Mr. Webster closed the event with more words of wisdom during which he emphasized the importance of kindness and being present. He shared a story called The Three Questions based on a parable written by the great Russian author Leo Tolstoy. He also reminded the students that they are part of a special community.

“The simple fact that you are in a school that cares deeply about you as individuals and strives to create a community in which you will thrive makes you fortunate.  You will have a wide range of opportunities in which you can participate and excel, and it is up to you to make the most of them.  My wish for you is that you will do so with a sense of joy, gratitude, and kindness,” Mr. Webster said.
