NASA Cloud Scientist Enlightens Eighth Grade Students

Rudy Brandl

Marilé Colón Robles a Cloud Project Scientist at NASA Langley Research Center, and Angela Rizzi, NASA Senior Outreach Coordinator, met Mrs. Noreen Jafri’s Earth science students on Monday, November 28 to learn about clouds. Eighth graders heard about some unique clouds and why Marilé is passionate about them. Students had the opportunity to ask questions, including the interview process for NASA!

When observing clouds the day, the eighth graders discovered that one class period, the sky could have scattered white cumulus clouds of various elevations, but the next period could be overcast grey stratus clouds. As part of NASA’s GLOBE, eighth graders are citizen scientists, and they report cloud cover, opacity, cloud types, elevations, and more. Students submit their observations to NASA. Once data is compared with overhead satellites, Mrs. Jafri receives emails to confirm the data matches.
