While Maiti O’Connor '23 acknowledged it wasn’t her best performance, she was very upbeat with a big smile on her face after capturing a state medal for the second straight year at the NJSIAA Diving Championships at Montgomery High. Maiti finished sixth in the state to cap a fabulous diving season in which she won four meet titles and built momentum for a future that includes a collegiate diving career.
“I definitely could have done better on a few dives, but I’m proud and happy with how I did,” Maiti said. “This wasn’t my best, but it was still one of the better meets.”
The judges awarded Maiti most scores in the 6-7 range until she executed her best dive of the night on the eighth of 11 dives in the competition. That reverse pike earned a perfect 10 from one of the judges and moved Maiti up the ranks heading into the final three dives.
“I was talking to my friends and getting hyped up for that dive,” Maiti said. “I was really excited to nail that one.”
A crowd of family, friends and LA supporters made the trip to Montgomery to cheer for Maiti, who is the first diver in school history to earn a state medal. Maiti looks forward to regions, zones and nationals when the USA diving season begins in April.
