Our Lower School Garden Club continues to provide a hands-on experience for our second, third, and fourth graders this fall. Led by third grade teacher Katherine Heiss, Lower School Spanish teacher Maria Hinestroza, and Lower School STEM teacher Kelly Coleman, 18 Lower School students and parent volunteers are working to keep our garden sustained.
The Lower School Garden Club meets on Tuesdays after school. At this past week’s meeting, students, teachers, and parents worked together to create a LA jack-o-lantern. The Garden Club engages in hands-on experiences where the students learn about the importance of sustainability by weeding, planting, and meditating.
This week they will engage in a scavenger hunt as they plant milkweed for our monarch butterflies, which are currently going through metamorphosis in two Lower School classrooms. There are currently two monarch butterflies and nine chrysalis. All Lower School students are able to learn about the process of metamorphosis in their weekly Spanish classes by observing the butterflies in each stage of the process.
Flowers from our garden are anticipating the arrival of the remaining butterflies. Once that happens, the entire Lower School family will be invited to a Monarch releasing party in the garden. We invite you to stroll by the garden when you are visiting campus and enjoy the various flowers, pumpkins, and fall foliage that our Garden Club has so graciously tended to this school year.
