Fans filled the bleachers in Laidlaw Gym for last Friday’s Winter Games, hosted by the LA Booster Club. The first game of the tripleheader featuring the undefeated LA girls’ varsity basketball team was canceled, but the LA boys battled Spotswood and the Alumni Basketball Game returned after a two-year hiatus.
The event included food, fun and games, Super Fan T-shirt giveaways and a half-court shooting contest. Parent volunteers also sold items in the Booster Club Spirit Shop while students, parents, faculty and alumni enjoyed the action.
The Rams fought hard and kept the game close in the first half but lost to the Chargers despite inspired play from seniors Harrison Kilpatrick ’23 and Gyrord Gregoire ’23. Harrison carried the offense with hard drives to the basket and good 3-point shooting, while Gyrord battled the taller Spotswood players on the boards.
The Alumni Game was a competitive and hard-fought contest. Team Menns stormed back from a nine-point deficit to post an exciting 51-47 victory over Team Santana. Captain Camille Menns ’15 scored 17 points to lead the winners against her LA teammate Vanessa Santana ’13. Mike Newman ’15 added 13 and LA Chef Anibal Rodriguez chipped in with eight points for the winners. Team Santana featured balanced scoring with Luke Burroughs ’99 and Mario DeSantis ’01 netting 10 points each and Luke Romeo ’15 firing in a game-high three 3-pointers for nine points.
Alumni, families and friends gathered for a post-game reception in the Oakwood Room, featuring stadium style fare prepared by Sage Dining Services.
