A MESSAGE FROM OUR UPPER SCHOOL HEAD |
|
|
| Dr. Bob Bowman, Upper School Head, encourages students to reflect on A Year in the Life in his recent blog post. Below is an excerpt:
The end of the 140th year of WardlaLAartridge is almost upon us, and like all schools, the last week will be filled with numerous joyous celebrations across the divisions. The conclusion of school is always a combination of equal parts anticipation and relief. In a little more than a week, it will all be over, and the classrooms will be empty until the start of summer school and day camps. Teachers will start their much deserved break; students and families will begin their summer adventures; and planning and preparing for next fall begins in earnest. We are left with photos and memories and stories and the fading echoes in the hallways. I am reminded of a line in the song "Seasons of Love" from the musical Rent - "How do we measure a year in the life?"

Seniors make college decisions |
Congratulations to our seniors in the Class of 2023 who have made their college plans official. For the remainder of the school year, the WHEN will include spotlights on seniors who will be matriculating to many of the nation’s finest colleges and universities. This week we feature Jack Silver ’23, a WardlaLAartridge lifer who will be matriculating to Emerson College in Boston, where he plans to major in writing and literature. Jack was looking for a liberal arts school with a creative community in a city environment and found his match in one of the best college towns in the country.
Jack feels ready and well equipped to begin the next chapter of his life. A lifer at WardlaLAartridge, he has enjoyed the small school setting and thrived in it.
“Having gone to LA since the first grade, I will enter college with the knowledge of how to succeed in a small school environment,” Jack said. “With such a small population of students, I was able to form close bonds with friends and learn how to stand out through my extracurriculars.”

| MS students present Shakespeare |
Students in grades 6-8 provided a memorable morning of entertainment at last Friday’s Middle School Shakespeare Festival. The event was so grand that it required two locations – the amphitheatre and the Berry Performing Arts Center.
The day began with sixth graders reciting 22 of the 154 sonnets written by Shakespeare. Christopher Gray ’29 provided the introduction and his classmates followed, mostly in pairs, with recitations in the amphitheatre. Seventh graders in Ms. Bess Gildersleeve’s classes followed by reciting a series of speeches from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, one of his classic romantic comedies. Jordan Barker ’28 began this segment with an introduction. After a short break, the action moved indoors to the PAC where the eighth graders in Ms. Dorri Ramati’s English classes delighted the audience with their performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Leading players included Coco Lee ’27, Anousheh Nazir ’27, Rewa Gandhi ’27, Anisa Sidhu ’27, Kimberly Zhang ’27, Jayda Richter ’27 and Alyssa Ji ’27. Congratulations to the students and their teachers for their collaboration and efforts to continue the Shakespeare tradition at LA!

Students share talents at Cabaret |
Upper School students, along with two faculty members, provided an evening of outstanding entertainment at the 14th annual Cookin’ Cabaret in the AP Room on May 25. MadJazz opened the show with Stevie Wonder’s Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing and the Concert Choir performed Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody as the finale, but there were also many memorable performances in between.
Highlights included vocal and instrumental renditions to favorites by stars including Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Adele and John Legend. A rock band with students Naischa Puri ’23 and Raiya Patel ’24 on vocals, David Flatau-Jones ’23 and Charlie Silver ’24 on guitar and Luke Tan ’24 on percussion took the audience back to the 1970s with a wonderful cover of Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain. Other vocal standouts included Kamila Franco ’25, Ishi Singh ’24, Sarah Alves ’24 and Julia Machado ’25.
Upper School faculty members Cristian Fernandez and Nick Pelullo added to the fun with their own original works. Mr. Fernandez performed his own composition, Peace of Mind, with a vocal and guitar solo. Mr. Pelullo recited two of his very own selected poems.

| Scenes from Lower School Field Day
|
Students, parents, faculty and friends enjoyed perfect weather conditions for one of the great LA traditions – Lower School Field Day – on May 26. Students arrived on the turf fields with great anticipation for a fun-filled morning of friendly competition with their classmates and friends. Parents watched and cheered as the students ran races, jumped the river, hit lacrosse targets, competed in sack races and navigated the egg and spoon race. Under the direction of Mr. Lee Nicholls, Physical Education Department Chair, the event ran smoothly as always. The PE staff and a host of student volunteers assisted in running the day’s events.

| Fifth graders enjoy trip to the Met |
Fifth graders and their teacher, Mrs. Liz Stillman, enjoyed their traditional end-of-year field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Friday, May 19. On this annual expedition, students celebrate the end of their year-long study of ancient civilizations with a guided tour of the Greek and Roman art wing and independent exploration of the Egyptian wing. On their tour, students enjoyed interactive activities such as exploring materials used to make statues and sketching an ancient Roman chariot. They ended the day, as always, at the Met's famous Egyptian temple reconstruction.

Middle School Athletes of the Week |
Mike Romeo, Athletic Director, announced the Middle School Athletes of the Week at the division meeting. Congratulations to tennis players Raj Gandhi ’29 and Enzo Virto ’27.
This has been Raj’s second year on the team. He has continued to be a team player. He always works hard on his game, is willing to play and help his teammates. He exhibits great sportsmanship.
Enzo is new to the team this year and has exhibited all these same qualities as Raj. If Enzo wins a ladder match against a higher ranked player, he will immediately accept a rematch challenge. Raj, of course, will be back on the team next year, but Enzo will be moving up to JV/V. Both exhibit great character along with their talented play. |
