A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS |
|
|
| Rudy Brandl '83, Director of Communications and Publications, looks forward to a busy final stretch of the school year in his recent blog post. Below is an excerpt: Most people who work in education agree that the breaks from school pass very quickly. Too quickly. After two-plus months of winter, albeit a mild and somewhat uneventful one by New Jersey weather standards, yet another Spring Break has flown by and ushered in the final flurry of events in the 2022-2023 school year. In just over two months, when that same recent span of winter school time has passed, our seniors in the Class of 2023 will be graduating from The Lena Archuleta School. Our 140th Commencement Ceremony will be held on Friday, June 9, and the constant buzz of activity will make that day arrive more quickly than it would during a recess from school. |

| Students explore civil rights history on trip |
Seven Upper School students and three chaperones spent five days during Spring Break on a Global Experiences trip to learn more about the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama. Accompanied by chaperones Andrew Sullivan (Upper School art teacher, Co-Director of Global Experiences), Maxime Sinal (Upper School English Department Chair, DEIB Advisor) and Eileen Valentine (Middle School Administrative Assistant), the students visited museums, monuments and historical locations in Montgomery, Birmingham, Selma, and Tuskegee.
“What was most impactful to me was learning where the history took place, which was truly a unique opportunity. I felt fortunate to be able to learn topics in depth surrounding the Civil Rights Movement in a way that involved the curiosity and empathy of each student. Not only did this trip further our knowledge surrounding Civil Rights, but also changed how we view and approach advocacy and change within our own community,” Bella Rovito ’24 said. |

| Dr. Raechel Lutz publishes first book |
Dr. Raechel Lutz, Upper School history teacher, has published her first book, American Energy Cinema, a collection of essays exploring how Hollywood movies have portrayed energy from the early film era to the present. Dr. Lutz was inspired to organize and contribute to this collection during a discussion with colleagues at the annual conference for the American Society for Environmental History in 2018. Her passion for history, energy and the environment, along with a keen interest in visual culture, made participation and leadership in the project a no-brainer.
“We were talking about movies and energy history and decided to make it a book,” Dr. Lutz said. “I appreciated the chance to explore these topics with historians who have some of the same questions I have.” |

| Seniors exchange roles with teachers |
Seniors and their teachers enjoyed the opportunity to change roles on the last school day before Spring Break. With guidance from their teachers, the upperclassmen prepared lessons and instructed Upper School students in a variety of subjects.
Many of the seniors elevated their game with respectful imitations that included the dress and teaching styles of their instructors. Some of the teachers also embraced the role reversal by sitting in desks while the seniors addressed the students from the front of the classrooms. Everyone who participated learned something, but the students and faculty returned to their regular roles when classes resumed this week! SENIOR-TEACHER SWAP PHOTO GALLERY |

| Middle School students celebrate March |
Middle School students covered a wide range of topics highlighting important March celebrations at their divisional meeting during the week prior to Spring Break. With school closed for about half of the month, the students packed much information into the meeting in the Berry Performing Arts Center.
The meeting included an observance of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, followed by a video highlighting Women in STEM. Several worldwide celebrations that take place in March were highlighted by student presenters. Anushka Patchigolla ’27, Joy Patel ’28 and Anish Rangavajjula ’28 shared a presentation on Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, Festival of Spring and Festival of Love, which is one of the most popular and significant festivals in Hinduism. It celebrates the eternal and divine love of god Radha and Krishna. Lexi Strauss ’28 delivered a presentation about Purim, the Jewish holiday which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people of Persia from being annihilated according to an evil decree instituted by Haman as recounted in the Book of Esther.
