Distance Learning in Lower School
In the Lower School, teachers create a virtual classroom by intentionally replicating the structure of the brick and mortar classroom in an online environment. Important routines such as Morning Meeting, whole group instruction, small group instruction, and one-on-one lessons provide students with familiar experiences to pave the way for academic success. Direct instruction is designed to emphasize interaction within the digital classroom and provide academic lessons while students learn a set of skills, approach to learning skills, which are essential to students’ success.
The Primary Grades focus on preparing students to complete assignments independently throughout synchronous and asynchronous instruction. Daily morning meetings, small group instruction, and live instruction provides the support needed for students to successfully learn new material. In the Intermediate Grades, lessons are designed to provide students with the support to take ownership of their learning. Morning Meetings anchor the day’s work by establishing the classroom environment and separating home from school while preparing students for the day’s events. Lower School teachers deliver instruction and lessons with our inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning in mind. We prioritize higher-order thinking and building habits of mind, both in the physical and the virtual classrooms.

First Grade
First Grade teachers, Mrs. Howell and Mrs. Molloy, teach students about non-fiction text features in their distance learning reading lessons.
Second Grade
Second Graders spent time learning about, crafting their own, and reciting poetry for family and friends.
Third Grade
The Third Grade students present their annual speeches about famous Americans.
Fourth Grade
Fifth Grade
Third Grade Art
In Third Grade Art, Mrs. Howard gives students instruction on Pablo Picasso's work and later they present their own Picasso-styled creations.
Fourth Grade STEM
Mrs. Maciorowski challenged the Fourth Graders to use items they had at home to complete STEM activities, including building a robotic hand.
We were truly awed by the caring and considerate actions of the teachers during the time of distance learning. Our family feels that these positive acts of kindness light up our days, when many negative news clouds many of these crazy days. What the teachers are doing touches not only the students and parents, but also other people who appreciate uplifting acts such as those that the LA faculty do.
